Top 10 Random Things On My Mind Right Now

  1. Reason # 152 why I hate winter:  Coming home from work last night I got stuck in my driveway.  I was half in the street and half in the driveway.  Luckily we had some sand in the garage and my boyfriend was able to help me eventually get unstuck.
  2. Reason # 153 why I hate winter:  We walked in the house after finally getting unstuck to find the top of the bay window leaking all over the place.
  3. I've started a new knitting project.  An Afghan!  I am quite intimidated since it's a much larger project than I've ever worked on before, but I had been wanting to make one for a while and my mom bought me an afghan pattern book for Christmas so... it was time.
  4. I finally broke down and bought myself a Kindle (amazon affiliate link) today.  Free 2-day shipping right now so I should have it on Friday.  Can't wait!
  5. We are very, very close to actually booking our Hawaii trip.  I have some slight hesitations/reservations (mostly with how long the flight is, and how expensive it is) but I think we're going to do it.  And I think it will be well worth it the travel time and money.
  6. I am currently reading Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout (amazon affiliate link).  I am about half way through and it's really pretty good.  It's a short, fun read and I would recommend it if you're currently looking for something to read.
  7. I did finally finish that Valentine's Day post for my friend Christina I have been mentioning and I believe it will be posted over at her blog tomorrow.  It's my top 8 greatest reasons to celebrate Valentine's Day.
  8. We went to Subway for dinner last night (I was too tired to cook and then clean up after not getting much sleep the night before and then all the issues we had once we got home from work) and I had 2 coupons that I brought with us.  Each was for $1.00 off footlong value meal or 50 cents off a 6" value meal.  The cashier didn't let us use both, but she did let us use one of them even though we didn't get a value meal, and she took the $1.00 off my boyfriend's footlong instead of only 50 cents off my 6".  Small victories.
  9. Today marks my 11th anniversary at work.  I didn't start full-time until June 5th because I was still in college, but today is the anniversary of when I started part-time.  I was legally of age to drink alcohol for approximately 4 months when I first started.  Wow.  Where has the time gone?
  10. I am pretty sick of my current wardrobe.  I don't think I've bought anything new since early fall-ish.  But since I just bought a Kindle and we have the pending Hawaii trip, I don't think I'll be going clothes shopping any time soon.

I read Olive Kitteridge last year and really loved it. Most people I know did NOT like it, but I think perhaps they didn't really understand it. There are a lot of layers to Olive and the stories in general and I thought the writing was phenomenal.

Our winters here in Seattle are fairly mild, temperature and snow wise, but the gray days and rain are killer. We've had some pretty decent weather this winter, which has been nice, but my boyfriend and I are flying to Vegas tomorrow where it will be sunny and 70 degrees! I can't WAIT.

Hawaii is definitely worth it. I was born and raised there and have been back many times. You'll love it! Which island are you thinking?

I invested in a Nook this year and I love it! I haven't read Stout's book yet, but it's on the list. I love winter, but that is bc I have lived in 130 degree weather for 10 years, but wow those are some pretty unfun ways to experience it.

I've gotten stuck going up my driveway before. I used to live in CT. The driveway was somewhat steep, and sometimes I didn't have enough momentum to get up. I'd have to look behind me for cars (my street had a double yellow line), back up, and floor it to get up the driveway. I hated the winters in New England. Don't miss them one bit. :-)

Hi Stevie,

I've got another 30 pages to go on Olive Kitteridge. It does seem to be kind of hit or miss with people but I really do enjoy the character and the writing. I also really love Henry's character!

Very glad you've been having a good winter (at least weather-wise). The winters here tend to be very cloudy (I think we've had maybe 2-3 days of sun so far in 2011) as well as freezing and lots of snow.

We've spent most of tonight doing more research for our trip. We are thinking of staying on Oahu. As someone who was raised in Hawaii, do you have any suggestions for us in terms of best places to stay (we are looking at the Outrigger Reef on the beach or the Hilton Waikiki) or things to do while there? We are looking to keep it pretty low-key, mostly relaxing and enjoying the nice weather but enjoy kayaking, hiking, bike riding and might want to try snorking. A helicoptor ride also sounds pretty cool but fairly expensive.

Hey Heidi,

I've only had the Kindle for a couple of days but so far I love it! I've already downloaded 'Room' and 'Water for Elephants' as well as a few of the free classics. Please let me know if you have any other suggestions of good books you've read recently or some of your favorites from the past.

I honestly don't think I'd miss winter at all if I were to move somewhere with warmer weather and no snow. Of course, I also don't want to live where it is 130 degrees either! I can't barely stand when it hits 90 here.

Q,

I was actually born in Western MA and both of my parents were raised there so not far from CT. That sounds really rough with the steep driveway and the busy street. Luckily I am at the end of a quiet cul de sac so didn't have to worry too much about being in anyone's way while I was still half in the street. It is supposed to get up near 40 tomorrow and hopefully be near or above freezing the rest of the week. Looking forward to it melting some of the snow and ice and making things a little more bearable. :)

There is plenty to do and see in Waikiki. The city of Honolulu is really vibrant so spend some time just wandering the streets. Just so you know, Waikiki Beach is not a long stretch of beautiful white sand. It's much more broken up into small pieces of beach, so if you're looking for beaches like that you'll want to see other parts of the island. But there is still plenty of space for beaching, swimming and sunbathing in Waikiki.

I would recommend renting a car at least for a day to check out the rest of the island. It's not a big island so it doesn't take long to get around it. I would drive around the Windward (east) side of the island, or drive the old Pali Highway to get there. There are beautiful beaches and gorgeous scenery. A few things you could check out are Haunama Bay for snorkeling, Sea Life Park (kind of like a small Sea World), Bellows or Waimanolo Beach.

The North Shore is my favorite part of the island. You should definitely spend a day, or even just a few hours, up there. Haleiwa is a darling little surf town with wonderful restaurants and shops. You can go to the beach at Waimea Bay and head up to Waimea Falls, which are both beautiful. There are plenty of other beaches, too.

If you're in to history, the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor is really cool. But get there early if you want to see it.

Diamond Head is a fantastic hike with incredible views. The hike isn't too strenuous.

Stevie, wow. These are amazing suggestions and I thank you so much for taking the time to write it all out for me. We've done som additional research and are looking forward to doing and seeing a lot of the things you recommended.
