The Last Song

A couple of months back I saw the book The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks at the grocery store.  I was actually in need for a book to read, it was 40% off, and I liked the other Nicholas Sparks stuff I have read, so on a whim I bought it.

II read it fairly quickly, and I really, really liked it.  I didn't want to put it down.  It is probably my second favorite of all his books I've read, after The Notebook.  So I was quite excited when I saw the movie was coming out.  Even though I am quite a homebody, and am almost never the one to initiate an outing, I quickly sent out feelers to a couple of girlfriends to see if they'd be interested in seeing it.  I knew there was no way I was going to get my boyfriend to sit and watch this movie, let alone actually pay to see it.  Then I checked rottentomatoes.com.  And I kind of panicked for a moment.  It was given a rating of 13%.  13%!  I was embarrassed that I had started this thing in motion, and now people were going to hate it.

I had one friend in particular that I thought might like to see it with me.  She was actually very interested, even though she hadn't read the book yet.  I let her borrow the book and she read it in a weekend.  She loved it as much as I did.  And she still wanted to go see the movie even though the ratings were pretty abysmal.

So I'm heading out shortly to go see it.  I'm thinking we'll still enjoy it, despite the critics.  We know it's not going to be winning any Oscars, and we've set our expectations accordingly.

Are you a fan of Nicholas Sparks?  If so, what's your favorite of all his books.  Have you see this movie?  If so, what did you think?  Have you ever organized and outing or an event that was a complete bust?!

I'd go see this w/ you but I don't think we live anywhere near each other! Lol. Most of my friends hate Miley Cyrus w/ a passion, so I haven't even suggested it to them. But... this looks like an incredible story and I've always loved Nicolas Sparks movies in the past.

My all-time favorite N.S. movie is The Notebook (it is right up there in my top ten all-time favorite movies, in fact). All of his are really good though. I like how moving the storylines are, how emotional yet not-cheesy they are, etc. And they usually have a really hot guy in them, which always helps! ;)

The only N.S. book I've actually read is The Notebook, which I read way after I'd seen the movie several (dozen) times. I was surprised to find that I didn't like it as well as movie (this coming from an avid bookworm who usually likes the book better than any movie). But... I do have several of his books on my shelf that I've been needing to read, so I'll be interested to see what I think of those.

Yes, actually, I recently tried to rally a group together to go see Muse in concert (my favorite band - they are super awesome!) and all my friends gave me a blank stare and said, "Who? Muse? Never heard of them." No!! Wrong answer!! Lol. I felt so dumb. Oh well. Their loss. In the end I didn't even get to get to go b/c I hadn't realize their show was on Easter weekend and my mom wanted me to come to her house. Total fail. Lol.

I'm so glad to hear the book was so good! I got it for Christmas and it's been sitting on my shelf ever since... I typically like N.S. books, but there were a couple I found a little wishy-washy (I think I've read everything he's written) so I guess I haven't been on a real kick for him lately.
That being said - you must, MUST read his book Three Weeks with my Brother. It's not fiction - it's an account of his life, and it's fabulous. Sounds boring but is really amazing. You will love him even more as an author after reading it.
It is hard to find, of course, I'd recommend phoning a few used book stores or simply ordering it online. A delicious read indeed. :)

Thanks for the great comment, Jennifer M. :) I almost always like the book better than the movie, too. I pretty much won't watch the movie until I've read the book, unless I don't ever plan on reading it. Muse, eh? I am pleased to inform you that I do know who they are. I only know a couple of songs, but I am at least familar. Haha. Sorry you weren't able to make it to the concert.

Marisa, thanks for the recommendation! I will definitely put that on my To-Read list. I'll probably order it from amazon. You should read The Last Song and let me know what you think!

By the way, my friend and I both really liked the movie. So while a couple of the other girls couldn't go, it was still at least somewhat successful. :)
